Mattress startups have surged in popularity in recent years with big names like Casper and Leesa reshaping the tiresome process of buying a mattress. Options are affordable, arrive in easy-to-unpack boxes, and remove the pressure-filled floor sales pitch entirely.
At Insider Reviews, we’re serious about getting a good night’s sleep. We’ve tested a ton of the biggest names ourselves, including Casper, Leesa, Saatva, Tuft & Needle, and Bear, to determine the best mattress. As a result, it’s safe to say we’re sleeping easy. While the Leesa Hybrid is our overall favorite, we’ve also identified the best mattress for side sleepers, the best mattress for back pain, and the best spring mattress.
And we’re hardly alone in our praise; startup darlings are fast appearing in high-end hotels around the country, too.
While many big-brand hotels prefer to market their own mattresses in collaboration with big-name companies like Serta and Simmons, their offerings tend to run expensive.
An increasing number of hip hotels are opting to outfit guestrooms with the affordable startup brands we know and love. From Breckenridge’s coolest new ski-in, ski-out hotel to a four-suite Catskills hideaway, these hotels are making blissful sleep more accessible, since it’s easy to replicate the experience and buy these well-priced mattresses for your bedroom at home.

Options trading Leesa
Leesa is a socially conscious, direct-to-consumer mattress company and the Leesa Original is the brand’s flagship, all-foam model. We’ve reviewed it and loved it, and also found it’s great for side-sleepers. It’s made with top-of-the-line foam for a cool sleep, pressure relief, and a nice “hug” when you crawl in, suited to all body types and sleep positions.
The brand also offers a hybrid mattress, which we also loved. In fact, it’s the best pick from our buying guide and we found it fantastic for hot sleepers. It’s definitely a crowd-pleaser, which makes it a great choice for a hotel room.
Finally, the Studio, a new, budget version of the memory foam mattress, is about half the price of the Hybrid Queen. For more on how it compares to other Leesa mattress models, see our breakdown, and for deep discounts, check prices during annual sale times.

The hip, boutique MADE Hotel, located on the edges of NYC’s NOMAD and Koreatown neighborhoods, offers guests a variety of room types with plenty of pluses such as Frette towels and linens, Samsung flat-screen TVs, Davines toiletries, and a Leesa Hybrid mattress. Leesa also used the money from MADE’s mattress order to expand its partnership with the Bowery Mission in New York City, and the company has donated more than 40,000 mattresses to family shelters across the US.
Outside the city, the iconic Breakers, a Montauk boutique motel, has also been using Leesa Original mattresses since the summer of 2017, when the property was revitalized with hip retro vibes that pay tribute to its 1950s beginnings.

Options trading Wink
Wink, an ethically minded mattress startup, makes every mattress by hand and offers three models. The foam-innerspring hybrid The WinkBed is known for its fantastic support and body-heat wicking, the all-foam MemoryLux is made with AirCell foam for nice contouring, and the latex-hybrid EcoCloud is made with Talalay, or what the company calls “the world’s finest all-natural sleep material.”

Arguably Breckenridge’s hottest new hotel opening this year, Gravity Haus is a Soho House-esque, Japanese-inspired ski-in, ski-out property. Along with amenities like HIIT classes, guided backcountry trips, and a hyperbaric oxygen chamber to replenish your supply after an active day in the high altitude, the 60-room hotel features Wink mattresses in each of its rooms.
Gravity Haus, which has an eye on sustainability, selected the brand’s EcoCloud mattress, which is made from all-natural materials like organic cotton, 100% natural Talalay latex, and recycled steel coils. “Gravity Haus was primarily interested in working with us and specifically using our EcoCloud mattress because of its all-natural quality, which fits into their brand ethos,” says Dan Adler, Wink’s founder and CEO, adding that all-natural mattresses also “resonate with their outdoor enthusiast membership base.”

Options trading Keetsa
Keetsa, established in 2007, is the brainchild of a former mattress manufacturing company that broke out with its own line of mattresses. They looked at different sleep types and designed six mattresses to fit around them, meaning, it’s pretty close to a custom good night’s sleep.
They’re also environmentally minded. Memory foam is usually made with petroleum oil, and they’ve replaced 12% of that with castor bean oil, which helps reduce dependence on the oil industry.

The 1 Hotels group is renowned for their eco-friendly, sustainable approach to every single material used in their hotels. So, it’s no surprise to learn they use the organic cotton Keetsa Tea Leaf Dream mattress in their Central Park location, as well as also the brand’s Brooklyn Bridge and South Beach, Miami properties. We’ve reviewed all three properties and can safely vouch that sleeping on their Keetsa beds was as indulgent as the 1 Hotel experience itself.
You can also find Keetsa in Hawaii. Each room in Mauna Lani, a top-notch beachside Hawaiian hotel, is equipped with Keetsa mattresses, whether you opt for a guestroom (with a balcony showing off sea and mountain views) or the resort’s luxurious ocean view bungalow.
Additionally, all standard rooms at the Mauna Lani outside Park City, Utah, have Keetsa mattresses swaddled in tightly tucked white duvets, and some beds face floor-to-ceiling mountain views.

Options trading Tuft & Needle
Technically speaking, Tuft & Needle isn’t quite a startup anymore. Led by two software engineers who created in the company in 2012 after becoming fed up with mattress shopping, they were acquired by Serta Simmons in 2018. The hit Original Mattress is made with the brand’s own adaptive foam and open-cell foam with cooling gel to wick away body heat even as you’re cozied up under the duvet.
“It’ll quickly wrap you up in its soft and comfortable embrace,” wrote our reviewer. “If you want to try to get work done while sitting in this bed, here’s my recommendation: don’t. My experience with the mattress is that you’ll simply end up horizontal, slumped into an impromptu nap.”

Tuft & Needle mattresses can be found in the guest rooms of hotels including Sister City, the newest property from ACE Hotels, located in the Bowery district of Manhattan. We reviewed the stylish hotel with simple, efficient rooms, great views, a buzzy scene, and affordable rates.
At The Whaler’s Inn, a picturesque historic hotel in equally idyllic downtown Mystic, Connecticut, coastal New England rooms are fitted with crisp white pin-tucked duvets and Tuft & Needle mattresses.

Options trading Casper
Casper mattresses are about as ubiquitous as it gets for a bed-in-a-box mattress startup. Their mattresses keep you cozy in the winter and cool in the summer, and they constantly keep customer feedback in mind when designing and improving products.
The aptly named Original offers three zones of support and comes in either an all-foam design or a hybrid model. We tried and loved the all-foam one, but the hybrid made our list for best mattresses for side-sleepers.

Casper mattresses are available at several hotels around the country, including East Austin Hotel, a boutique hotel located in the heart of, well, East Austin. Each of the 75 guest rooms draws on midcentury Danish inspiration for a retro motel-chic look. Think blue carpet, pink plaid curtains, and bamboo chairs. Each rose-striped duvet covers a Casper mattress.
Hotel Zetta, on San Francisco’s Union Square, offers Casper mattresses in each of its “Well and Away” Rooms, which are focused on wellness and sustainability. Along with the King-sized mattresses, the plush rooms are also decked out with Peloton exercise bikes, a Muse meditation headband and cushion, and Dyson Pure Hot+Cool Like purifiers.

Bear‘s mattresses are targeted to customers with an active lifestyle. They’re designed not only to be comfortable but to provide cooling and recovery overnight. And, as we’ve found, it’s the best affordable pick if you have back pain and also made our list of best mattresses for side-sleepers. The secret ingredient? An “infrared textile” called Celliant. According to Bear, this FDA-determined medical device may help promote more restful sleep, aid recovery, regulate body temperature, and help people wake up with more energy.

You can find the mattresses at hotels across the country, including Woodstock Way Hotel in the Catskills; Loews Coronado Bay Resort, a luxury resort right on San Diego Bay, which we reviewed and loved, and the small-but-chic rooms of the Walker Hotel Tribeca, located in Lower Manhattan.
Bear mattresses are also used in the rooms at the Legacy Hotel at IMG Academy, a multi-sport training and educational institution, and the stylish Watt Hotel Rahway, a Hilton Tapestry Collection Hotel, about 25 miles from New York City.
